Brave – I Want to See You Be Brave

Sometimes brave is about timing. Sometimes it’s about having the courage to speak up. Sometimes it’s about both. Because when the two meet, freedom comes. “Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live.”

There’s revolution in Iran. There have been revolutions across the Middle East. Last year in Hollywood, actresses stood up and took down an icon who had been sexually assaulting and degrading them, and then the whole world followed suit…women began to testify using the hashtag #metoo – they, too, had been abused and were sick of it. Women are sick of it.

Women are talking. Women are running for leadership in the United States of America, following the election of a man who boasted about sexually assaulting them. The electorate and the system put him into power, but there is power in witnessing this and knowing it will end at some point. Why? Because women are part of the change. Just as I read in this article about an Iranian woman standing up for the real heart and essence of her country and her rights as a human being in the face of the corrupt leadership of bunch of despotic men, the personal is political. “I am Iran” was the statement. Incredible. What one voice can do. Move mountains.

We will be brave in this world. Women have always been brave in this world. We just need to be seen. So, let’s put it out there. State your truth. Sing your truth. Paint and dance it. Draw and write it. Shout it on the main streets and rooftops of your hometowns and big cities. Occupy space. Dream in the face of the cynical. Talk. Pop. Rock it. For we are women. And women give birth to life, and a whole lot more. Be. Brave.

Brave – Sara Bareilles

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if youSay what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be braveI just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be braveI just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue

Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
See you be brave

I just wanna see you (yeah)
I just wanna see you (oh ooh)
I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
